Frequently Asked Questions
Do compact fluorescent bulbs contain mercury? If so, should
we use them? Yes, all fluorescent lamps contain a tiny amount of
mercury. But if handled properly, it poses no harm. Do not break
or let children play with CFLs. (That mercury is less than what
would otherwise be emitted into the air by a coal-fired power plant
burning 3X more coal to power an equivalent incandescent bulb!)
Store spent lamps in the packaging of replacement bulbs until you
can properly dispose of them. Louisville residents may take them to
HazBin (and some Home Depot locations) for free disposal.

So, what's the solution? Studies show that existing technologies --
for using energy more efficiently and tapping renewable energy
sources -- could cut our greenhouse emissions by 80% by 2050.
Doing so would reduce climate change, reduce utility bills and create
good jobs. See the Tackling Climate Change in the U.S. Report.
Has Louisville's climate been impacted? Yes. Dr. Keith Mountain,
a UofL professor of geosciences, is analyzing hourly data collected
in Louisville by the federal weather bureau since 1948, with these
preliminary, statistically significant and atypical (for the United
States) findings:
- Peak and average daily temperatures are relatively stable.
- Minimum daily temperatures are increasing.
- Snowfall is declining and so rainfall is increasing.
Note: The Louisville Metro Natural Hazards Plan calculates that flooding
and severe thunderstorms are our worst risks of injury and property damage.

Should I sign up for LG&E's Demand Conservation Program?
Yes. This demand-side management program allows LG&E to cut off
your central AC unit's compressor (not its fan) for one 15-minute
period on a handful of the hottest summer afternoons. By rotating
through participating customers, LG&E can reduce peak demand and
avoid firing up its oldest -- and dirtiest -- power plants. Participants
receive $5/mo during June-September.
Should I sign up for LG&E's $25 Home Energy Audit? Yes.
While it's not the most detailed energy audit available, you'll receive
plenty of helpful info and advice, plus free CFLs, efficient shower-
heads and, if needed, a hot-water-heater jacket.
Should I buy a conventional stand-by or tankless on-demand
hot-water heater? That depends. See the decision-making info
offered by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy.
How can global warming be real when some areas still get
record snowfalls? 1. "Weather" is short-term, and not the same as
the long-term "climate." 2. As the earth heats up, more water
evaporates into the air; that moisture changes into snow whenever
winds take it to cold enough places. Watch this explanatory video.
How can I buy green power to reduce climate change and the
ravages of coal mining? Customers of LG&E and KU may now buy
certified renewable power! Sign up here
