Frequently Asked Questions
This page will address the most frequently
asked questions received by Louisville CAN.
Do Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) really contain mercury?
Yes, all fluorescent lamps contain very small amounts of mercury,
but present no health hazards if handled properly. Don't break or
allow children to play with them. Note that CFLs contain much less
mercury than is emitted via the combustion of coal to provide the
3X more power required by incandescent equivalents. Metro
Louisville residents may take spent burned out CFLs to HazBin for
free, proper disposal. For more info, please see CFL FAQs

So, what's the solution? LCAN believes that we must fully tap
the existing opportunities for energy efficiency. A recently
released report funded by the US Gov't concluded that we can
cut our greenhouse emissions by 80% by 2050. Doing so would
reduce climate change, reduce utility bills and create good jobs.
